Versatile ARCA Racing Series To Make 87th Appearance at Salem
With Daytona and the Palm Beach Int'l Raceway road course in the rear view mirror, the ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards will get back to its roots and some very familiar territory Saturday and Sunday, April 10 and 11 for the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200 presented by ApplianceZone.com at Salem Speedway, the 87th appearance of ARCA at Salem since 1955. The event at Salem kicks off a busy stretch of events for ARCA during which the series will race at Texas Motor Speedway (April 16) and Talladega Superspeedway (April 23).
Marks on the Mark in 2010; Leads Points to Salem
Palm Beach road course winner Justin Marks has a 30 point lead headed to Salem over Robb Brent and Steve Arpin who are tied for second. Defending Salem winner Patrick Sheltra is fourth in points just 35 from first. Tom Hessert, Mikey Kile, Bryan Silas, Tim George Jr., Joey Coulter and Nick Igdalsky complete the top-10 respectively with local favorite Frank Kimmel in 11th. Among the top-10, only Kile and Igdalsky have never raced at Salem, often regarded as one of the most challenging tracks on the ARCA schedule. Kile drives for Venturini Motorsports while Igdalsky, grandson of Pocono Raceway Patriarchs' Drs. Joe and Rose Mattioli, drives for Andy Belmont Racing.
Kimmel Looking for Win at Home Short Track
Frank Kimmel is the all-time ARCA winner at Salem Speedway with 9 victories at the half-mile short track. However, Kimmel, who has 74 series victories total, hasn't won on the ARCA RE/MAX Series tour since Salem last year. He is just five wins shy of Iggy Katona's all-time win mark of 79.
Phase 1 Construction Project Continues at Salem
Salem Speedway owner Owen Thompson has been very busy at track with phase one of a major transformation project underway at the historic southern Indiana oval. The infield scoring tower that once stood front and center has already been removed to make way for a new short track being constructed inside the half-mile oval. Phase one of the project will focus on the addition of a 3/8-mile asphalt oval in the infield of the existing .555-mile track. The new short-track will be configured for oval and figure-8 racing as well as road course racing. A new scoring tower has already been completed, which is situated up on the top floor of the frontstretch super structure (spotter location). Despite the new construction, Speedway officials insist that the historic high-banked, half-mile oval will continue to be the centerpiece of racing at Salem. Phase two of the project, scheduled for 2011, includes improvements to the existing .555-mile oval and construction of a .44-mile dirt track.
Notable Salem Winners: NASCAR Cup champion Bobby Allison, six-time ARCA Racing Series champion Iggy Katona & former ARCA national champions Jack Bowsher, Justin Allgaier, Bill Baird, Tracy Leslie, Nelson Stacy, Ron Hutcherson, Ramo Stott, Dave Dayton, Moose Myers, Marvin Smith, Bob Keselowski, Bob Brevak, Tim Steele and Kimmel. Other notable ARCA/Salem winners include '52 Indy 500 winner Troy Ruttman, USAC/ARCA stock car veteran Don White and Cup series veteran Ken Schrader.
